Alana’s Therapeutic Approach

I utilize mindfulness, acceptance, and values to help people develop their ability to work with the suffering they experience in a more effective way.

I believe that a well-lived life is more than just the absence of pain; it is the presence of meaning and purpose. In therapy, I am most interested in helping people to discover what they do want their lives to be about, rather than focusing on what they don’t. I support people in living lives of integrity, purpose, and meaning, even when the inevitable difficulty of life presents itself. I help people to explore what it means to create a meaningful life in the service of what would be most important to them.

Therapeutic Services

  • I use an integrated and holistic approach that incorporates aspects from a number of therapeutic modalities such as CBT, ACT, and DBT. I will incorporate your values, cognitions, emotions, behaviors, and nervous system into the therapeutic process. We'll work collaboratively to uncover and discover what brings meaning and vitality to your life.

  • I have a passion for working with young people. I have experience providing mental health care to children, adolescents, and their families through a variety of settings including schools, clinics, hospitals, private practice, and through telehealth services. Whether you are seeking support for your young person as a preventative measure or to address presenting symptoms, I am here for your family.

Too often, I talk to caregivers who share that they don’t know what their child worked on with a previous therapist. This will not happen with me. While honoring the confidentiality of the therapeutic relationship, I engage caregivers in the therapeutic process through family sessions, caregiver sessions, or check -in calls. I believe in the importance of caregivers learning how to to support their young people in the therapeutic process. This can include:

-Learning about developmentally appropriate behavior that their child may be exhibiting

-Learning about the tools and strategies that your child is learing in session so that you can mirror those skills with your child outside of session and support their practice

-Learning how to provide loving but firm and consistent household limits so that you don’t feel that you are chasing your tail every time a new behavior emerges and your child knows what to expect

-Learning strategies to care for yourself so that you can show up for your child as the parent you would like to be

I use a combination of evidence based practices to best fit the child and the unique circumstances they are seeking support for.

  • Group therapy is a transformational process that helps people learn and apply skills amongst peers who are walking a similar journey. Currently accepting clients on a waitlist for the next group cycle for the following groups:

Relapse Prevention Therapy Process Group: This group focuses on the core tenants of Relapse Prevention for people in addiction recovery. This group is based off of the Gorski-CENAPS model, which I am a faculty trainer of. Participants will learn how to identify their personal relapse warning signs and develop strategies to move towards progress in recovery. This group differs from the coaching group in that it is an ongoing processing group. Participants must have a commitment to abstinence during the course of this group.

  • I am a passionate provider of ecotherapy, or nature therapy. Research continues to demonstrate the positive benefits of connecting with nature on both physical and mental health. In ecotherapy, the client will choose if we simply hold our session while sitting in the woods, are walking and talking, or engaging in another outdoor activity. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis after an initial diagnostic exam.

  • I am a licensed therapist in six states and offer video-based telehealth therapy in California, Connecticut, Nevada, Oregon, New Hampshire, and Washington.

You are not broken. I believe in the inherent wholeness of all humans. We are products of our environments and learn strategies that help us cope with life. Some of those strategies may have saved us when we began using them but may no longer serve us in our present day circumstances. That is okay.

Committing to your well-being is a significant gift you can give yourself and your loved ones, so why wait?
